Blockchain and Crypto • Lesson 8 / 9

Wallets, Keys, And How To Actually Hold Crypto

Over the course, you've learned why blockchain was created, how cryptocurrencies work, what smart contracts make possible, and where this technology is being used in the real world.

A common thread runs through all of it: removing the need to rely on an intermediary.

But that shift comes with a trade-off. When there's no bank holding your money, no platform controlling your assets, and no institution managing your credentials, the responsibility moves to you.

That's where wallets come in.

But how do crypto wallets actually work? What are private keys, and why are they so important?

Most importantly, how do you keep your assets safe in a system where there is often no one to call for help?

Let's find out.

Crypto wallets

Most beginners assume a crypto wallet stores cryptocurrency.

It doesn't.

If you buy Bitcoin, the Bitcoin never enters your phone, laptop, or wallet app. It remains on the blockchain, where ownership is recorded on a shared ledger maintained by the network.

A wallet doesn't store your crypto. It stores the keys that allow you to control it.

Understanding that difference is the first step to understanding how crypto security actually works — and why losing a wallet is very different from losing access to a bank account.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain what a crypto wallet actually does
  • Understand how public keys, private keys, and wallet addresses work together
  • Compare hot and cold wallets, and know when to use each
  • Distinguish between custodial and non-custodial wallets
  • Avoid the most common mistakes that lead to lost funds
