Blockchain and Crypto • Lesson 2 / 9

What Is Cryptocurrency, And How Does It Differ from Traditional Money?

Welcome to GoMining Academy’s Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies course.

In the previous lesson, we explored how blockchain enables people to transfer and verify value without relying on a central authority. By distributing the record across thousands of computers, it creates a system that is transparent, secure, and resistant to tampering.

But a blockchain is only infrastructure. In this lesson, we'll focus on what is built on top of that very infrastructure: cryptocurrency.

Let’s dive in!

You might already have a mental image of cryptocurrency.

Maybe it’s Bitcoin making headlines, someone getting rich overnight, someone losing everything just as fast, or simply a word that keeps coming up and feels overly mysterious to bother with.

The concept is less complicated than it appears. And once you understand what ordinary money actually is, cryptocurrency starts making a lot more sense.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain what cryptocurrency actually is and why “crypto” is in the name
  • See how it differs from the money you already use every day
  • Understand what gives it value — and why that question isn’t as strange as it sounds
